Research Center for Biotechnological Law, CUPL was founded on May 9th, 2005, and is the only center for research on biotechnological law in China. The director of Center is Prof. Changling Zhou who works in the Institute of Intellectual Property, CUPL.
The area of research concentrates on interdiscipline of biotechnology and law as well as other disciplines, such as biotechnological intellectual property, genetic information, genetic resources, biological safety, biological variety, biological medicine, biological politics, and other social or legal issues.
Since the foundation, the Center has conducted multiple research projects, including Major Projects of National Social Science Foundation “Research on Basic Legal Issues of Biotechnology” (completed, awarded excellent level); “Research on Patent Application of China Gene Project” sponsored by Ministry of Science and Technology (1985-2002)”(completed, brief reports to the central government);and“Intellectual Property Issues of Gene Projects” sponsored by IP Center of Ministry of Science and Technology (work-in-progress). Center for Biotechnological Lawactively constitutes academic communication and cooperation with domestic and international institutes and agencies, including Ministry of Science and Technology, State Intellectual Property Office, China Academy of Science, China Academy of Agriculture, Peking University, Advanced Institute of UN University, and multiple institutes from the US, UK and France.
The development of Center depends on the advantages of talents and research in the field of law and biotechnology of CUPL, gradually deepens and broadens research, enhance the cooperation with foreign agencies, and actively serves the management of national biotechnology, relevant legislation, and biotechnological industry. As a result, the Center aims at upgrading itself as one of the advanced research institutes of biotechnological law in China.
The researchers in the Center comes from various disciplines such as law, biology, medical science, life ethics, political science, etc. Members include the director Yinliang Liu, and the researchers Zuming Li, Jian Chen, Xuanyu Zheng, Siyan Zhan, Yu Zhang, and Zhiben Wang.
