The Research Center for Intellectual Property was founded in July, 2005. Thesis supervisor and Prof. Chu Zhang is the director of Center. The English name of Center is “Center for IPR Studies, CUPL”, short for “CTLS”.
The Responsibility of Center is: through the hosting of academic activities on intellectual property, establish the channel for communication between domestic and foreign intellectual property scholars, create the opportunities for academic communication and academic research between domestic and foreign intellectual property scholars, improve the deep-level research on intellectual property, enhance the integration of intellectual property and legal practice, incentivize perfection and improvement of China IP law and system, and make contribution to scientific innovation and cultural prosperity in China.
The Center hosts the following academic activities: 1. Accept commission from state legislative agencies, judicial agencies, administrative agencies, corporations, relevant organizations, and international organizations, conduct research on issues of intellectual property law for above agencies or organizations; 2. Collect, process legislative, judicial, and academic information, guide domestic experts and scholars conduct exclusive research on hotspot issues; through the Center publication and media, recommending a number of high influential analyzed reports and intellectual property academic writings for domestic and international academic community; 3. Accept commission from judicial agencies, administrative agencies, IP service corporations, law forms, and other organizations, and provide professional counseling for issues on intellectual property law; or directly provide professional counseling to parties in IP dispute under the authorization of courts or other law enforcement agencies; 4. Conduct various kinds of academic cooperation with foreign intellectual property teaching and research agencies, and motivates academic interaction and communication of domestic and international agencies.
In the course of research on IP theory, discussion on legislation, and analysis of judicial cases, the Center earns high reputation and excellent appraisal from academic community and society. Until the end of 2014, the Center had completed Major Project of National Social Science Foundation, Major Project of Humanity and Social Science under Ministry of Education, and national legislative projects, theory research projects, counseling research projects commissioned by LAOSC, Ministry of Culture, the SAPPRFT, the SIPO, Beijing Copyright Office, and Beijing Information Office. The Center accepted the commissioned projects from China Mobile Co. and other companies. Moreover, the Center hosted multiple large-scale of intellectual property seminars and counseling conferences, especially the “Forum of Science and Law”. Last but not least, the Center invited distinguished IP scholars and prominent judges at home and abroad for the lectures on intellectual property forefront issues, hotspot issues, and theory discussion.

The Center consists of one directors and several vice-directors, and invites intellectual property faculties of CUPL who are able to independently conduct projects for participation into the Center. Meanwhile, the Center hires experts, scholars, and practitioners from society as guesting researchers so as to establish a high level intellectual property academic research group.
